66-year-old woman airlifted in critical condition after being hit by truck in Mission: RCMP

MISSION – Police in Mission say a 66-year-old woman was seriously injured and airlifted to hospital in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle while she was in a pedestrian crosswalk Tuesday evening.

Mission RCMP spokesperson Corporal Harrison Mohr says first responders were called to Cedar Street and Cherry Avenue in Mission just after 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night (June 16). Police say a 66-year-old woman was struck by a grey Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

Corporal Mohr says it appears the truck had been northbound on Cedar Street, stopped at a red light, and started to turn right onto Cherry Avenue. At the same time, the woman began crossing westbound across Cedar Street, reportedly with a pedestrian walk signal at the time.

Due to a serious head injury, the victim was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. There is no further update on her condition at this time.

Police say the 73-year-old driver of the truck stopped immediately and spoke with police. However, Mission RCMP issued a breath demand to him, and he registered a “warn” reading on a roadside screening device. As a result, he was issued a 3-day immediate roadside prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act. The alleged level of impairment did not meet the threshold for criminal impaired driving charges to be recommended, Corporal Mohr said.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended to examine the scene, and the Chevrolet Silverado will undergo a mechanical inspection.

“Mission RCMP highlight this as a reminder for drivers to exercise additional caution and awareness at all intersections, particularly when turning right on a red light,” Cpl. Mohr said.
