CHILLIWACK — Nearly a dozen motorists could be on the hook for ticketing costs, vehicle towing fees, license suspension, and likely higher ICBC rates after they senselessly drove impaired on New Year’s Eve.

According to statistics released Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 4) by Chilliwack RCMP Sgt. Krista Vrolyk, media spokesperson for the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment, Mounties removed ten high-risk drivers off the road on the night of Saturday, Dec. 31.

Mounties issued eight 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions (IRP), a three-day immediate roadside prohibition, and one 24-hour roadside prohibition.

A 90-day IRP can involve a scenario where a motorist’s blood-alcohol concentration was equal to, or greater than, 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, according to the B.C. government website. The driving prohibition can be instituted if motorists drove a vehicle while their ability to operate it was impaired by a drug or a combination of alcohol and a drug as determined by a drug recognition expert, or failed or refused without a reasonable excuse to follow a demand under section 320.27 or section 320.28 of the Criminal Code regarding the operation of a motor vehicle.
