Cougar sighting in Lindell Beach prompts advisory

CHILLIWACK — The community coordinator for WildSafeBC is giving residents a heads-up after a family of big cats was spotted in Cultus Lake recently.

Lori Roberts posted an advisory online saying there is currently a whole unit of cougars in the Lindell Beach area.

“They are not a concern at this time, we just want to make you aware of their presence,” said Roberts. “In the next few days Conservation Officers will be putting signage up in the area.”

She then shared a few tips on how to deal with a cougar during an encounter, such as:

  • Making yourself appear big and loud
  • Looking it in the eye
  • Keeping dogs leashed
  • Using bear spray, which WildSafeBC offers free lessons on
  • Using a backpack to cover your neck area if attacked

Cougar encounters are relatively common in B.C., including in the Chilliwack and Cultus Lake area.

An aggressive cougar was blamed for killing three sheep and an emu on a Vancouver Island farm just last month, and in December 2025, WildSafeBC also issued a warning about a cougar sighting at Mt. Thom.

Residents are asked to reach out to fraservalley@wildsafebc.com with any questions, and call the RAPP line at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277) if they see a cougar.
