AGASSIZ – A spokesperson for the Agassiz RCMP detachment says one of its officers was assaulted by a woman during a disturbance call on Morris Valley Road over the weekend.

According to a statement from RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, Agassiz RCMP members responded to a disturbance on Morris Valley Road Sunday (May 3). When police arrived, they observed a man and woman located near a vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the road.

Police say they approached the woman but she became uncooperative and agitated. The officer tried to engage the woman through conversation to ensure her well-being, but the situation quickly escalated, Corporal Kiener said, resulting in the woman assaulting the officer.

Cpl. Kiener says the woman was arrested after “several” officers attended to de-escalate the situation.

The woman who allegedly assaulted the officer will be appearing in court at a later date.

In another notable incident reported over the weekend, two vehicle break-ins occurred overnight on Agassiz Avenue. Corporal Kiener says a Good Samaritan attended the Agassiz RCMP detachment on Lougheed Highway with personal items and work uniforms they had located on their front lawn.

Officers contacted the listed employer of the items. The employer subsequently confirmed to police that one of their vehicles had been broken into overnight. The vehicle owner later notified police that two of his vehicles had been entered and items were stolen from the vehicle.

A wallet located on a nearby lawn was also taken from an unlocked vehicle that was broken into the same night.

CCTV footage has been obtained, and Corporal Kiener says RCMP members are working to identify the suspect.

Earlier in the week, a wanted man was located on Monday, April 27. Officers responded to a disturbance reported inside a residence in Agassiz. A man was allegedly involved in an altercation with other occupants and sustained injuries that required medical attention. RCMP members learned during the investigation that the man had several outstanding warrants for his arrest. After initially hiding in the home, the man later presented himself to police. He was transported to hospital for treatment and subsequently held in custody to address the outstanding warrants through the court process.

There were 77 calls for service in Agassiz during the week of Monday, April 27 through Sunday, May 3, according to Corporal Kiener.
