MAPLE RIDGE – Mounties in Maple Ridge say a 37-year-old man is facing steep financial penalties, no car for a month, and a chat with the Ministry of Children and Family Development after he was caught driving his Tesla impaired at over 110 km/h above the speed limit with his kids aboard.

According to a statement from police, Maple Ridge RCMP’s Road Safety Target Team (RSTT) was conducting speed enforcement duties in the 25200 block of Lougheed Highway on Sunday evening, April 12 at about 5:45 p.m. Using their laser reader, police observed a white Tesla traveling at a ridiculous clip of 191 km/h in a posted 80 zone.

Once he was pulled over for a traffic stop, the 37-year-old Vancouver driver was subjected to a roadside Approved Screening Device (ASD) test after displaying signs of impairment. The driver failed the ASD test, meaning his blood alcohol concentration was greater than 100 mg%.

The driver was immediately issued a 90-day driving prohibition and served a $483 violation ticket for excessive speeding. His vehicle was impounded and he will be responsible for paying all required towing and storage fees. High-risk driver premiums and escalating insurance will also bring the total costs up even higher.

“The driver advised that he was heading home after spending all day at his children’s extracurricular activities,” says Maple Ridge RCMP Specialized Response Team Sergeant Joe Whalley. “Instead his family had to find an alternative way home and got to see first-hand the consequences of excessive speeding and impaired driving. We’re thankful that things didn’t turn out worse than they did.”’

In situations like this, police say RoadSafetyBC can impose further driving sanctions such as an Ignition interlock device being installed in the vehicle and/or completion of the Responsible Driver Program. Police confirm contact was also made with the Ministry of Children and Family Development regarding the safety of the children.

Maple Ridge RCMP says it will continue to proactively enforce road safety in the community targeting unsafe driving behaviours that places drives and other motorists on the roadway at greatest risk.
