Hope and Area Recreation Centre to undergo repairs to remediate ‘irregularities’ in ice arena

HOPE – The Fraser Valley Regional District says the Hope and Area Recreation Centre is under construction to remediate “dimensional irregularities” in the corner of the rink, work that will be fully funded by the contractor responsible for the remediation.

According to a statement from FVRD communications manager Samantha Piper, the ice at the arena has been removed to allow for regular maintenance and necessary repairs to begin. Remediation work will focus on adjusting the dimensions of the arena’s concrete slab to bring the final ice surface area to full National Hockey League specifications.

The FVRD says the scope of work required to complete the necessary slab modification and associated system works is anticipated to continue throughout the summer months and wrap up in advance of the fall ice season.

“Following the identification of dimensional irregularities in the corners of the rink, the FVRD proceeded to temporarily install the boards in a manner that shortened the playing surface,” the FVRD wrote in a statement. “This interim solution ensured that the ice could still be utilized while the full remediation plan was developed and the required components were secured. The FVRD is thankful for the continued support and patience of the community during this period of time.”

As mentioned above, the cost of this repair work is being covered by the contractor responsible for the remediation. The contractor is committed to ensuring the project is completed as originally scoped.

The regional district says the innovative heat recovery system and modernized ice plant, in addition to the upgraded electrical service and supporting infrastructure, are performing well. As a result, the FVRD says it has experienced increased energy efficiency, reduced operational costs, and measurable environmental benefits for the facility.  The upgrades have made the rec centre “increasingly sustainable and eco-friendly by minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.”

While the Hope and Area Recreation Centre will remain open, the arena will remain closed to the public currently due to the active construction zone occurring inside the arena. If customers are planning to visit the Hope and Area Recreation Centre, they are reminded to follow signage and directions by onsite work crews, as construction activity will be on going. No disruption to Recreation Centre clients (aquatics, fitness, and registered programs) is anticipated at this time. However, the regional district points out that there may be small equipment or debris staging areas that appear in the parking lot throughout the construction period therefore, the FVRD is asking for the public’s cooperation and understanding during this period.

Members of the public who have questions regarding programming or scheduling for the Recreation Centre are asked to contact the centre during reception hours by phone at 604-869-2304, by email at leisure@fvrd.ca, or by stopping by the front reception desk at the Centre. Any questions or concerns about the construction process may be directed via email to info@fvrd.ca.
