Abbotsford city council working with other levels of government to address growing homeless camps
ABBOTSFORD — Officials in Abbotsford are looking outward for help in addressing homelessness in the community.
“[Homeless encampments] are often unsafe and give rise to additional public safety, fire and sanitation challenges, placing considerable pressure on municipal and emergency services,” said the City of Abbotsford.
“Unfortunately, jurisdictional boundaries are one of the key factors that prevent the City from being able to address some of our most hazardous sites.”
The City explained that the encampments along the Highway 1 corridor at Peardonville Road, the McCallum Road/King Road interchange and the Whatcom Road park-and-ride area are all on provincial land, which means local officials do not have authority to act on the encampments.
