Mission Memorial Hospital’s reduced ER hours extended for an entire month

MISSION – The Fraser Health Authority has now confirmed that the emergency department at Mission Memorial Hospital will temporarily reduce its hours for another month due to reduced staffing levels.

According to a statement from Fraser Health, Mission Memorial’s ER hours will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. effective today, Tuesday, April 7 through to Monday, May 4.

FHA is framing the reduced hours as a way to “support the community with safe, consistent access to emergency care aligned with available staffing.”

After 5 p.m., FHA says emergency-trained nurses will continue to be on site and available to support walk-in patients needing basic care, assist with re-direction of care, and/or transfer patients with urgent needs to a neighbouring hospital.

FHA claims it’s making every effort to recruit healthcare staff to the hospital, despite making the same statement during previous announcements and press releases.

“We are continuing to make every effort to recruit more staff and prevent further service adaptations. If any future adaptations are required, we will communicate them to the community in advance,” FHA said. “We know how important access to emergency care is for the community. These temporary hours of operation help us provide safe, reliable care for the community while our recruitment efforts continue. Our focus remains ensuring patients and families receive the care they need, safely and responsibly.”

It says residents with non-life-threatening concerns can access the community’s Urgent and Primary Care Centre or call Fraser Health Virtual Care for advice.

Fraser Health says people experiencing a medical emergency outside the 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. operating hours should call 911, where paramedics will assess and transport patients to the most appropriate facility.

Staff shortages are behind the situation, according to the Fraser Health statement. The health authority says it is continuing physician recruitment, supported by national and international efforts. Several candidates are currently in the hiring process and are expected to improve coverage in the coming months.
