LANGLEY – Mounties in Langley say a novice driver was issued several vehicular violations and had their pickup truck impounded after the motorist was caught on camera performing stunt driving manoeuvres in a McDonald’s parking lot.

According to a statement from Langley RCMP media relations officer Constable Meghan Marsden, Langley RCMP fielded a report on Wednesday, April 8, from a local Brookswood business near 41 Avenue/200 Street about a group of youths causing a disturbance in the area.

Langley RCMP members reviewed video surveillance in the area in which a driver engaged in dangerous driving behaviour by performing stunt driving manoeuvres in a public parking lot.

Police say several youths were seen running nearby while the vehicle circled them, creating a significant risk to public safety. The driving behaviour also resulted in damage to the roadway.

Through video analysis, investigators identified the vehicle and located the driver, who was subsequently arrested for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The driver, a novice N license holder, was issued several violations under the Motor Vehicle Act, including:

  • Driving without due care and attention
  • Failing to display an “N” sign
  • Stunt driving

These offences carry fines, penalty points, and resulted in a 7-day vehicle impoundment. During the impound process, officers also observed numerous deficiencies associated to the truck. Cst. Marsden says the vehicle was deemed unsafe for the roadway, and a notice and order was issued requiring a full inspection and necessary repairs at a certified facility before it can be driven again.

Investigators have forwarded a report to the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles recommending a review of the driver’s ability to continue maintaining a driver’s license.

“Dangerous and stunt driving behaviours place everyone at risk, including motorists, pedestrians, and nearby residents,” said Cst. Marsden. “Keeping our roadways safe remains a priority. This type of driving behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Langley RCMP are asking the public to report dangerous driving when they see it. Witness information plays a critical role in helping police identify those responsible and prevent serious injuries or tragedies.

Anyone who observes dangerous driving is encouraged to safely gather details such as licence plate information, vehicle descriptions, video footage, as well as the location and time of the incident, and report it to police immediately.
