UPDATE: Cultus Lake Waterpark pledges ‘thorough, independent’ investigation following serious incident

UPDATE #3: Cultus Lake Waterpark released a statement confirming that it will be closed for the next 48 hours in order to conduct a “thorough and independent” investigation following today’s incident.

“Today (Monday, June 15, 2026) at approximately 11:05am, a serious incident occurred near one of our rides at Cultus Lake Waterpark, in the queuing area. We are deeply saddened by the incident which occurred today resulting in injuries to a number of guests visiting the park, including children. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims injured and families affected by this unfortunate event. We would like to thank Cultus Lake Fire Department and paramedics for their support and care today.

At this time, we are announcing a closure of Cultus Lake Waterpark for the next 48 hours in order to conduct a thorough and independent investigation. We are fully cooperating with the authorities through the process of investigation and assessment. We are determined to ensure that something like this does not happen within our facility again.”

UPDATE #2: Since these students reside in his city, Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West has released the following statement this afternoon:

“I am aware that students from Minnekhada Middle School in Port Coquitlam are among those impacted by the incident at Cultus Lake Waterpark today. As a dad, my heart goes out to the students and families affected. There are few things more frightening than receiving a call that your child has been hurt while away from you on a school trip. I am fully engaged on this matter and am in contact with the appropriate authorities as more information becomes available. The City of Port Coquitlam stands ready to support affected families in any way we can. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the first responders, medical personnel, and staff for their quick response.”

UPDATE: Twelve students were taken to hospital Monday after what appears to have been an electrical incident at a waterpark in B.C.’s Fraser Valley.

Cpl. Carmen Kiener with Chilliwack RCMP confirmed in an email that the children were in stable condition after receiving “serious but non-life-threatening injuries” at Cultus Lake Waterpark, near Chilliwack.

Ken Hoff, assistant director of communications for the Coquitlam School District, said the students from Minnekhada Middle School sustained “unspecified” injuries.

He said the incident occurred during a field trip for Grade 6 and 7 students.

A statement from BC Emergency Health Services said it had received a call shortly after 11 a.m. and dispatched ambulances, advanced care paramedics and other resources to the site.

Two of the 10 people hospitalized had to be transported by air ambulance, it said.

The RCMP were investigating what led to the injuries and the district was awaiting further information, Hoff said.

BC Hydro, meanwhile, said an initial investigation had identified an electrical issue originating on the customer’s side, rather than from the utility’s infrastructure.

“The safety of the public is our top priority, and we’re continuing to work co-operatively with the waterpark operator and will support the ongoing investigation in any way we can,” the provincial utility said in a statement.

CULTUS LAKE – Multiple paramedics and first responders are on scene at the Cultus Lake Waterpark Monday morning after an incident left several youth with injuries.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener says police were called to the water park at 11:20 a.m. for multiple people suffering from injuries.

There are no reported drownings, and all patients are reported to be in stable condition, she pointed out.

“We remain on scene for traffic control while paramedics treat the injured and transport them to hospital,” Cpl. Kiener said.

A landing zone has been set up. A helicopter has been requested, Cpl. Kiener said.

The Cultus Lake Community Association Facebook page reported that two helicopters have landed in Cultus Lake to transport patients.

The Chilliwack Progress reported that the incident involved electricity and several patients who suffered burns.

A Chilliwack paramedic aboard 206A3 radioed dispatch at 12:16 p.m. to say his ambulance was transporting three patients to an area hospital, and wanted to make sure staff at this hospital were aware.

CTV News Vancouver has reported that the students were from Minnekhada Middle School in Port Coquitlam.

An RCMP vehicle was blocking traffic at the roundabout in Cultus Lake near the waterpark as a result of the incident, causing traffic to back up, Cpl. Kiener said.
