Sleeping or zoned out? Highway 1 driver issued tickets
COQUITLAM — The driver of an electric car was issued tickets for driving without due care and attention and for speeding recently along Highway 1 in Coquitlam March 17.
In a news release, police say an officer pulled up beside an electric vehicle around 8:30 a.m. When the officer looked over at the driver of the car, they allege the driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel.
Mounties say the 37-year-old driver had her eyes closed and her arms crossed. “The driver said that she had ‘zoned out’ but was fully alert with her hands on the steering wheel,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. He continued, “In-car police video did not support the driver’s claim.”
Police say that some electric vehicles have self-driving modes, but they remain illegal to use in B.C. “You need to be fully awake, alert, focused, and in control of your vehicle at all times,” said Corporal McLaughlin.
