ABBOTSFORD – A Fraser Valley businessman who arrived in Abbotsford four decades ago as a refugee and made it his mission to give back to the community that welcomed him has funded a critically important piece of medical equipment at Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

A new electrocardiograph, or ECG/EKG, has been added to the Cardiac Care Unit at ARH thanks to a generous donation from Dao Tran, owner of the Abby Bike Shop, according to a statement from the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation. An electrocardiogram is a quick test conducted by healthcare workers that records electrical signals in the heart. Test results can enable medical professionals to diagnose heart attacks and irregular heartbeats, also known as arrhythmias.

“Having an additional ECG cart allows the team to be able to respond quickly to emergent, life-threatening patient presentations in the ER and around the site when other ECG machines are in use…a huge asset!” the foundation said.

As the foundation notes, Tran wanted to give back to Abbotsford in a tangible way. A former refugee, Tran recently started volunteering with Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, and also just signed up to be a volunteer with ARH.

“It is with a thankful heart to the community and the City of Abbotsford who opened their arms to me and welcomed me as a refugee 40 years ago, I am grateful to be able to support the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation and all they do,” Tran said.
