Chilliwack RCMP urge residents to stop leaving their vehicles unlocked

CHILLIWACK — Mounties in Chilliwack say far too many motorists are leaving their vehicles unlocked, making it easy for crooks to make off with people’s valuables across the city.

According to a statement from police, Chilliwack RCMP members responded to 29 theft from auto reports between Sunday, January 25 and Saturday, February 7.

Of the 29 theft from auto reports, 14 involved vehicles that were left unlocked. Police say this provides easy access to the criminals involved.

“These offenders look for quick, low effort opportunities,” Chilliwack RCMP said. “They often walk down streets or through parking lots checking door handles, looking through windows for visible valuables, keys, and garage door openers, and taking anything they can grab in seconds. They do not care who is affected—only how fast they can get in and out.”

• Lock your doors every time you leave your vehicle—at home, work, or in public.
• Do not leave garage door openers visible; take them with you or store them out of sight.
• Take your keys and fobs with you, even if you’re only stepping away briefly.
• Remove or hide valuables, including bags, wallets, electronics, loose change, tools, and identification.
• Report suspicious activity to the police
