48-year-old Chilliwack man identified as victim of Sunday’s homicide on Mellard Ave. in Chilliwack

UPDATE #2 – Homicide detectives have identified a 48-year-old Chilliwack man as the victim of Sunday’s homicide in Chilliwack to advance their investigation.

According to a statement from Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong, Mounties in Chilliwack were called to the 46000 block of Mellard Avenue Sunday morning (Feb. 15) at about 8:40 a.m., after a reported shooting at a home. When police arrived, they located two men inside the home who had suffered gunshot wounds.

Despite life-saving measures from first responders, one of the men died on scene, and the other was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In an effort to advance the investigation, investigators have named the deceased as 48-year-old Kristopher Benson of Chilliwack. The second victim remains in hospital in stable condition.

IHIT says it working in close partnership with the Chilliwack RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS), and the BC Coroners Service. While the motivation behind the shooting is still under investigation, preliminary information indicates that this was a targeted and isolated incident.

“Investigators are expected to be in the area for some time as they continue to process the crime scene and canvass for video evidence,” said Sgt. Fong. “Anyone with information who has yet to speak with IHIT is urged to contact us right away.”

UPDATE #1 — CHIILIWACK — RCMP in Chilliwack say one person was killed and another seriously injured in a shooting Sunday (Feb. 15) morning.

Police say they were called to a home on Mellard Avenue at 8:40 a.m. When they arrived, they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds. One person was pronounced dead at the scene while the other was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The RCMP Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken control of the investigation.

Meantime a heavy police presence continues in the area. Police are asking the public to stay away while investigators do their work.

CHILLIWACK – A heavy police presence has flooded the area of Mellard Avenue and Fletcher Street, located northeast of downtown Chilliwack, on Sunday morning.

According to multiple witness accounts, at least 10 police units, several ambulances and fire trucks surrounded the area of Mellard/Fletcher.

Police have set up yellow caution tape across one of the roads involved, according to an on-scene picture sent to Fraser Valley Today.

A helicopter has landed at the Chilliwack Airport to presumably assist one of the victims following this morning’s police incident.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener released a brief statement at 9:42 a.m. Sunday morning: “We are responding to an incident and I will share more information once it becomes available.  It is still very early in the police’s response to this situation.”

Scanner traffic indicated one person may have suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, but police did not specifically address this in their statement.
