YOUR PERSPECTIVE: Delivering more housing to people

Nov 25, 2022 | 4:51 AM

This Tuesday was National Housing Day.

In the growing Fraser Valley, affordable and available housing is a big concern for the people who live here, and for our government. That’s why your B.C. New Democrats have been investing in housing projects here in the Valley since 2018, including in my community of Chilliwack.

Prioritizing safe and secure places for people who are vulnerable or at risk of homelessness is no question for our government. In partnership with amazing non-profits and other local partners, we have invested in hundreds of supportive homes in Chilliwack with wrap-around support, including 16 units of housing geared specifically for youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

Building more rental homes that people can afford is top of mind, and that’s why we’ve invested in projects like the 74 units coming to Spadina Avenue in partnership with Mamele’awt Qweesome & To’o Housing Society. This project will consist of affordable rentals for low to moderate income families, seniors and people with mobility issues. Additionally, 23 new affordable homes for Indigenous families on Tzeatchen First Nation opened in June of this year.

Even more affordable units are on the way to Chilliwack with 66 new affordable rentals at the Paramount building expected to be complete in winter of 2024, with eight units reserved for youth aged 19-25. Through the BuildingBC: Community Housing Fund the province is contributing to the project by providing annual operating subsidies.

In addition to the record investments that we have made in housing across British Columbia, this week we took another step in increasing supply. B.C.’s new Premier, David Eby, introduced two important pieces of legislation. The Housing Supply Act will set housing targets to ask municipalities to approve new housing more quickly, in areas with the greatest need and fastest growth. By working together with municipalities, this act will help remove barriers and bring more homes to growing communities like Chilliwack and the rest of the Fraser Valley.

Our government will also amend the Strata Property Act to end rental-restriction bylaws and limit age-restriction bylaws in strata housing. These amendments will free up around 3,000 condos across B.C.

that are not able to be rented out under current strata rules, as well as provide more options for young families and those planning to start a family. In today’s housing market, strict rules that limit who can live in a home aren’t acceptable, and I’m glad our government is taking these measures to reduce these barriers.

These new measures are in addition to our ongoing efforts to make housing more affordable – including taxing empty homes, capping rent increases, and building more student housing.
