UPDATE: Fire Chief says fire on Chilliwack River Road appears to be caused by smoking materials

UPDATE, 3:50 P.M. THURSDAY: Chilliwack Fire Chief Andrew Brown says today’s fire on Chilliwack River Road appears to be accidental in nature and was likely caused by smoking materials.

Chief Brown says fire crews from Halls 1 and 4 responded at approximately 8:30 a.m. this morning. Dispatched firefighters reported smoke venting from a small window on the side of the house, and immediately upgraded the call to a structure fire and second alarm.

Initial arriving crews swiftly initiated an offensive fire attack while securing a water supply to bring the fire under control, Chief Brown said. Firefighters were able to effectively contain and extinguish the fire, confining it to the room of origin, which suffered significant fire and water damage.

A primary search confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated the building. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries.

“This fire appears to be accidental and caused by smoking materials,” Chief Brown said. “Chilliwack Fire Dept. wants to remind the public to ensure smoking materials are fully extinguished in an approved container.”

Original story from 9:10 a.m. Thursday morning:

CHILLIWACK – Chilliwack firefighters were called to the 7400 block of Chilliwack River Road Thursday morning for a reported structure fire at a home.

According to scanner traffic, firefighters were paged at approximately 8:30 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 5) after getting reports of smoke coming from the area near Knight Road and Chilliwack River Road. Responding firefighters then upgraded the incident to a second-alarm.

Firefighters radioed dispatch at about 8:38 a.m. to say a water supply had been established and a primary search was being conducted.

By 8:42 a.m. approximately, the fire was knocked down. A primary search of the first floor and basement had been completed.

BC Emergency Health Services paramedics were asked to respond to attend to one person.

Altogether, Engines 1, 4, 1-2, Tower 1, Air 1 and the Chilliwack duty chief attended the call.

At 9:08 a.m., firefighters asked RCMP to attend the scene.

Firefighters told dispatch at 9:34 a.m. that overhaul is complete. Firefighters said they would return for a post-fire check.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., Fire Prevention 2 left the scene following a post-fire inspection/check.
