Emergency crews respond to vehicle down an embankment in Chilliwack Wednesday night, but driver left the scene

CHILLIWACK – Police say impairment is not believed to be a factor in a reported rollover that happened Wednesday evening on Industrial Way in Chilliwack.

According to scanner traffic, Chilliwack Fire Department personnel, BC EHS paramedics and Chilliwack RCMP members responded to Industrial Way, west of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, at approximately 9:40 p.m. Wednesday evening.

The initial call paged Chilliwack Fire Department Engines 1, 4 and 6 for the report of a vehicle down an embankment.

Scanner traffic later indicated a white Mazda passenger vehicle had rolled over down an embankment and was on its roof.

Firefighters told dispatch all occupants of the Mazda were out of the vehicle but weren’t on scene.

Emergency crews began searching the nearby area along the CN tracks and Industrial Way for the driver. Firefighters radioed dispatch to say they were searching around the CN tracks.

Firefighters later told dispatch there were indications the driver was at home unhurt. Fire crews later cleared from the scene.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener says the cause of the crash involved driver error.

“The Chilliwack RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle upside down in an embankment on Industrial Way.  A search of the immediate area did not locate anyone associated to the vehicle,” Cpl. Kiener said. “Fortunately the driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, was located at his residence uninjured.  Police determined this was a single vehicle collision as a result of driver error, impairment is not believed to be a factor.”

The vehicle was later towed. A picture from Chilliwack resident Hailey VanBasten shows a tow truck backing in to retrieve the damaged passenger vehicle.
