IIO launches probe after one person suffers serious injuries from crash in Surrey

SURREY — The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says it is investigating a motor vehicle incident that sent one person to hospital with serious injuries Wednesday morning.

According to a statement from the IIO, information furnished by Surrey Police Service indicates that an SPS officer driving a marked police vehicle witnessed an allegedly stolen black Ford F350 truck near 88 Avenue and Holt Road in Surrey at about 5:25 a.m. Wednesday morning, Jan. 21. Police told the IIO that the F350 drove away.

The F350 was subsequently involved in a collision at the intersection of 88 Avenue and 128 Street with a dark-coloured Honda Accord, and a person riding a motorized scooter. The driver of the F350 left the area on foot.

The rider of the scooter sustained serious injuries in the collision and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The driver and sole occupant of the Accord was not seriously harmed.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident occurred and has launched an investigation to consider whether there has been an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm, as defined by the Police Act, and if there’s a connection between the serious harm and officer action or inaction. If both conditions are met, the investigation will continue to examine all available evidence to determine what occurred. At the conclusion of the investigation, the chief civilian director will consider whether there are reasonable grounds to believe that an offence may have occurred.
