UPDATE, 1:57 P.M. MONDAY: Chilliwack Fire Chief Andrew Brown says an initial responding firefighter who reported seeing a glow in the sky in the area of the original report upgraded this morning’s structure fire to a second alarm. Firefighters responded from five of the city’s six fire halls shortly after 1:30 a.m.

On arrival, fire crews identified and confirmed a fully involved barn fire. Fire crews worked promptly to contain the fire while setting up a rural water supply shuttle to bring the fire under control.

“Hose streams were also deployed to protect adjacent structures, confining the damage to the structure initially involved,” Chief Brown said. “Due to building structural concerns caused by the fire an excavator was brought in to assist firefighters extinguishing hot spots.”

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries, and there were no animals housed in the barn at the time of the fire, Chief Brown said.

This fire is under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department and RCMP, Chief Brown said.

Original story:

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack firefighters battled a barn fire at a rural farm property in Fairfield Island at approximately 1:30 a.m. early Monday morning.

According to scanner traffic via Chilliwack resident Julie Hiscock, the fire broke out at around 1:30 a.m. early Monday morning near Ballam Road and Kitchen Road. The incident was upgraded to a second-alarm fire.

Per scanner traffic, BC Hydro lines blocked the fire department from gaining access to the building as they were reportedly burnt off.

Video taken by Sandra Miller shows raging flames from the structure fire, believed to be a barn.

The Chilliwack Fire Department’s duty chief requested that an excavator be called in at approximately 1:50 a.m. for a post-fire demolition.
