CHILLIWACK — Over two dozen Chilliwack firefighters were dispatched early Tuesday morning (Nov. 1) to extinguish yet another vacant, unoccupied house fire in Chilliwack.

Twenty-five fire personnel from Chilliwack Fire Halls No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 responded to the 45800 block of Alexander Avenue at 5 a.m. for a report of a structure fire. On arrival, they found a two-storey residential house with heavy fire at the rear and thick smoke coming out of from a second-floor window.

The fire did not appear to spread, or impact neighbouring businesses like Klyn Kitchens & Cabinet to the west, or Plane & Nail Co. just east of the blaze.

According to a news release from Michael Bourdon, assistant fire chief for Chilliwack Fire, firefighters had a tough time gaining access to the rear of the building where the majority of the fire was situated. Once water supply was established, fire crews were able to knock the fire down and protect adjacent buildings.

An excavator was called in to help with salvage and overhaul. The building was taken down due to its instability and safety concerns.

A fire investigator was out Tuesday morning around noontime taking pictures of fire debris.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The fire is still under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Dept.

Chilliwack Fire Department urges owners of vacant homes that there is an increased risk of property damage including vandalism, theft and or fire damage. A fire in a vacant home increases the risk to the public and firefighters.
