CHILLIWACK — There are funding gaps when it comes to Fraser Health and its inability to fund all equipment needs across the health authority’s vast network of 12 hospitals serving the needs of 1.9 million people from Burnaby to Boston Bar.

That’s where the Chilliwack Hospital Foundation comes in, backed by a dedicated group of unpaid volunteers whose sole mission is to support Chilliwack General Hospital’s capital needs to enable health care professionals to provide quality care to all residents.

The unpaid, all-volunteer hospital foundation announced this past week that Burnaby-based Gulf and Fraser Fishermen’s Credit Union has donated $10,000 to the Chilliwack Hospital Foundation to fund one of eight laparoscopic tool sets that is currently on the hospital’s wish list.

“The Chilliwack Hospital foundation is your partner in community healthcare,” the foundation wrote in a news release this past week. “As an organization, we collaborate closely with the staff of the Chilliwack General Hospital to assist the needs of the hospital that directly impact patient care, and to assist our local doctors and nurses by ensuring we have new, updated equipment that is easy to use and provides the efficiency needed, especially in today’s staffing shortages.”

Laparoscopy involves a surgical procedure in which fiber-optic instruments are inserted through the abdominal wall to view and assess the organs in the abdomen, or to facilitate a surgical procedure.

While the eight laparoscopic tool sets are an essential item on the hospital’s wish list, there are other current needs hospital administration have enumerated to Chilliwack Hospital Foundation volunteers. The current needs include:

* Eight cystoscopes valued at $120,750

* 10 ER stretchers, three ICU ventillators, and four electrocardiograph machines valued at $420,000

* A surgical bundle containing one bariatric stretcher, two OR tables, and a flud management system, valued at $132,000

The Chilliwack Hospital Foundation keeps all donations in Chilliwack, and invites businesses and residents to support Chilliwack Hospital by being a 500 Club donor, by giving in honour or memory of a loved one, or creating a legacy by making a planned gift in estate planning.

“Thank you for your generosity and continuing to make Chilliwack a wonderful place to work, live and play,” the hospital foundation wrote.
