City of Chilliwack faults BC Hydro for unsatisfactory road conditions on Vedder Road

CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack says BC Hydro is to blame for the shoddy road conditions on Vedder Road that some motorists have complained about on social media.

A Sardis-area Facebook post from Thursday morning (Nov. 20) featured multiple complaints about the state of Vedder Road between Promontory Road and South Sumas Road. It generated over 40 reactions and 40 motorists, some of whom said the road was not in good shape.

The city agrees with these motorists.

“The current condition of the road is due to a BC Hydro project. City staff have already met with BC Hydro’s team to let them know that the road’s condition is unsatisfactory and that additional work is needed to smooth out the rough areas as soon as possible,” a statement from the city’s communications department read. “BC Hydro has advised that their crews aim to complete the road restoration by early next week; however, the City has scheduled our Operations crew to complete the work as a contingency, at BC Hydro’s cost and weather permitting, by Thursday next week.

BC Hydro has completed the duct installation portion of work on Vedder Road, from the Vedder Road/South Sumas intersection to south of the Promontory/Watson/Vedder Intersection. Additional resurfacing work on portions of the road will be completed shortly. The city is asking Chilliwack residents to visit its Traffic Notifications page for more information once it is available. A final layer of payment will be applied in the spring (weather-permitting) to complete road resurfacing.

“BC Hydro is aware of this condition and we hope to see them complete their works in advance of that, by way of their own contractors,” the city said. “We appreciate the patience shown by the community while we work to get the road surface restored as quickly and safely as possible.”
