ABBOTSFORD — Police in Abbotsford say charges are being recommended after a man experiencing a mental health crisis at the Abbotsford Airport Monday morning resisted arrest, bit one officer multiple times and became increasingly combative.

According to a statement from AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker, police responded at 7:55 a.m. Monday (Nov. 17) to a report of a man experiencing a mental health crisis at YXX. Two officers arrived on scene and located the individual in question in the check-in area. Through communication, police determined the man needed hospital care for mental health concerns.

When he learned that he was being apprehended under the Mental Health Act, Sgt. Walker says the man immediately resisted and began fighting with police. During the ensuing struggle, one officer was bitten multiple times. While on the ground and still actively resisting, the man attempted to remove a conducted energy weapon (taser) from an officer’s holster. An emergency call for assistance was made, and additional 911 calls were received from citizens reporting the man fighting with police.
