CHILLIWACK – Mounties in Chilliwack say a 21-year-old Surrey man has been arrested and formally charged for his alleged role which an 88-year-old victim lost a substantial amount of money through a grandparent scam.

According to a statement from Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Constable Hannah Sutton, police in Chilliwack launched a fraud investigation in October 2025 after receiving a report that an elderly woman had been defrauded out of a “significant” sum of money in which authorities commonly call a “grandparent scam.” Police were first notified about the incident on October 11, 2025.

Constable Sutton says the victim reportedly received a phone call from an individual she believed to be her grandson who claimed that he required money for bail.

Police say the victim gave a substantial amount cash to an individual whom she was directed to meet in person. When more money was requested, the victim became suspicious and reported the incident to police.

As a result of an investigation, a suspect was identified. Constable Sutton says police were able to recover a large amount of money that has since been returned to the elderly victim.

Constable Sutton says 21-year-old Mandeep Singh of Surrey was charged with one count of fraud over $5,000 on May 29, 2026. He was arrested and has since been released on conditions pending a court appearance on Sept. 9, 2026.

“Police will never ask for money over the phone,” said Cst. Sutton. “Individuals involved in this type of scam often create a sense of urgency and may tell victims they cannot speak to anyone else to prevent family members from intervening.”

Police urge the public to remain vigilant, to ask questions whenever possible, and to take steps to protect themselves from fraud. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is a trusted resource that provides tips and educational resources on its website.
