CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Fire Department personnel had a difficult time extinguishing an unoccupied residence that caught fire in the 45800 block of Reece Avenue Tuesday night (Oct. 25), but were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to adjacent properties and homes.

Chilliwack Fire was dispatched at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday night to a report of a structure fire in the 45800 block of Reece Avenue.

Approximately 30 firefighters responded from Halls No. 1, 2, 4 and 6 and discovered heavy flames and black smoke coming from the rear of a two-storey detached residential home.

According to Chris Wilson, assistant fire chief for Chilliwack Fire Department, fire crews faced several challenges in fighting this fire including difficulty accessing the home, as well as fire that was spreading into the attic and concealed spaces of the home.

Despite these challenges, Wilson said fire crews worked hard and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to nearby vegetation and adjacent properties. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and the home sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage.

This fire is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire officials and the RCMP. Two RCMP vehicles and a fire department truck were outside the home Wednesday morning investigating. Yellow caution tape had been strung across the front entrance preventing access along Reece Avenue.
