CHILLIWACK — The Canadian Lung Association says radon is an invisible, odourless gas that can seep into a home through cracks in floors, walls and foundations.

Not only is radon exposure the second-leading cause of lung cancer at 16 per cent in Canada, people who spend more time in buildings or live in a home with radon are at a higher risk for lung cancer, the Canadian Lung Association reports.

The City of Chilliwack is taking action to highlight the dangers posed by radon exposure by offering free radon test kits for interested community members, it wrote on Twitter Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 25).

“We have joined Take Action on Radon’s Test Kit Challenge!” the city wrote on Twitter. “Learn more and register for your test kit at chilliwack.com/radon.”

In partnership with Take Action on Radon, which is funded by Health Canada, Take Action on Radon is supplying 100 free kits to Chilliwack residents, and 100 additional free kits are being provided by the B.C. Lung Foundation. The City of Chilliwack will also supply 100 free radon test kits. In total, the City of Chilliwack will have 300 free test kits available for residents.

The Fraser Valley Regional District has arranged additional radon test kits for Cultus Lake residents.

There will be an information session for participating residents on Tuesday, November 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre, 9201 Corbould Street, inside Hub International Theatre. Take Action on Radon and national health organizations will speak and address questions or concerns from residents participating in the Radon Test Kit Challenge. This information session is the venue where residents can pick up their radon testing kits.

If you register and are unable to attend the information session, you can pick up your test kit from Chilliwack City Hall, 8550 Young Road. Cultus Lake residents are asked to access their kit from the Cultus Lake Park Board office, 4165 Columbia Valley Highway.

Residents of the District of Kent can pick up their free radon test kits at the district office, 7170 Cheam Avenue in Agassiz, while residents in the Village of Harrison Hot Springs can pick up theirs at the village office, 495 Hot Springs Road.

Residents will have their radon test kit for around 100 days to actively test inside their house. After the 100 days, the return week will take place March 6 – 12, 2023. The kits can be dropped off at Chilliwack City Hall and Cultus Lake residents can drop them off at Cultus Lake Park Board office. The radon test kits will be sent to the lab for results, and the results will be provided back to the individual participants.
