CHILLIWACK – The Federal Indian Hospitals Settlement will host a free claimant support session later this month at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel.

In a statement, personnel with the Federal Indian Hospitals Settlement say the free claimant support session will be held on Sunday, October 25 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Pacific Standard Time, at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel.

A group information presentation session will also be held on Saturday, October 24 at 11 a.m. at the Coast Chilliwack Hotel, located at 45920 First Avenue.

These sessions will offer trauma-informed, culturally grounded support to help claimants navigate the claims process. Trained claims helpers will be available to answer questions, explain eligibility requirements, and assist individuals with completing their claim forms.

Wellness and cultural supports will also be available on-site, and members of surrounding communities are welcome to attend.

These sessions are part of the Federal Indian Hospitals Settlement, which provides compensation to people who experienced psychological, verbal, physical, and/or sexual abuse while admitted to a Federal Indian Hospital during the time it was operated by the Government of Canada.   Compensation ranges from $10,000 to $200,000, depending on the severity of the abuse experienced. The settlement does not include claims related to medical treatment or malpractice.

The settlement also includes the creation of a Foundation and additional funding to support wellness, research, and commemoration. For more information, visit www.IHSettlement.ca or call 1-888-592-9101.

“We recognize that the Claims Process may bring up difficult memories and emotions for some people,” says Ashley Kenley, Community Support Program Lead for the Federal Indian Hospitals Support Program. “Our goal is to create a space where Claimants can access practical help while being treated with care, respect and understanding. Claims Helpers are there to listen, answer questions and support each person through the process without pressure.”
