B.C. Conservatives say Eby has accessed $10/day child care, while claiming many B.C. residents can’t

VANCOUVER – A B.C. Conservative Party MLA candidate says it’s shocking to learn that BC NDP Leader David Eby has accessed subsidized $10/day child care at a time when many B.C. residents are struggling with child care expenses.

In a statement sent to news media outlets Monday (Oct. 12), the B.C. Conservatives said Eby confirmed his family has accessed $10/day child care.

“It’s shocking to learn that while hundreds of thousands of British Columbians are struggling with the most expensive child care in the country, David Eby’s family landed a plum $10-a-day child care spot,” said Margareta Dovgal, Conservative Party of BC candidate for Vancouver-Yaletown.

Dovgal pointed out that Eby earns over $227,000 per year as premier.

The Conservative Party claimed that $10-a-day child care accounts for just 10 per cent of child care spots in the province, with many parents being unable to secure a spot.

“Nobody begrudges David Eby and his wife for their success. The Conservative Party of BC wants more British Columbians to succeed. What families will not accept is a Premier who promised them $10-a-day child care, failed to deliver it, and then took one of the scarce spots for himself while a single mom working two jobs sits on a waitlist,” said Dovgal. “David Eby looks after David Eby first. Parents struggling to afford child care deserve a Premier who fixes the problem instead of one who works the system for his own family.”

The BC NDP provided the following statement to Fraser Valley Today from Leader David Eby in response to this story:

“By securing a deal with the Prime Minister, BC and Ottawa will work together to reach a newly negotiated childcare funding agreement with a December 1st deadline. My family has benefited from a wonderful local childcare centre and I will keep fighting so that every family benefits from quality childcare across our province.

A couple of years ago, the childcare centre that one of our children was attending was designated as a $10/day site. When that occurred, we chose as a family to make a donation to that excellent facility. We felt that we did not need that discount and we wanted to make sure that the childcare centre could provide other supports for families in the community.

We will be making a similar donation to the childcare centre for our youngest child that attends the same facility.”

The BC NDP also said the the BC Conservatives have been silent in this campaign on whether they would reverse their historic opposition to the BC NDP’s child care fee caps, and Conservative platform chair Gavin Dew recently acknowledged, “we haven’t established a fee cap presently,” according to a quote provided to Global on Tuesday, Oct 6, 2026.

The NDP says its fee reduction initiative has reduced average childcare fees by 50 per cent, or about about $7,200 a year. It says eliminating the cap or reducing subsidies would cost parents thousands of dollars a year.

But just three weeks ago, the NDP said Conservative Child Care Critic Heather Maahs, MLA for Chilliwack North, tweeted “exactly right” in response to a post calling for subsidized spaces to be replaced with a tax credit for each child.

It also said Maahs tweeted: “$10 a day daycare is an abject failure, boondoggle… at what cost?”

The context around the second post involved concern from the Parksville, B.C., City Council, after only one of nearly 40 licensed childcare providers had been approved for province’s $10/day child care program as of March 2026.

Maahs has questioned whether the $10/day child care program has achieved its goals and is deemed effective.
