17-year-old girl tragically deceased after a vehicle crashed into a B.C. river: RCMP

KEREMEOS – Mounties in Keremeos are investigating a fatal single-vehicle motor vehicle incident in Keremeos that resulted in the tragic death of a 17-year-old girl.

BC RCMP spokesperson Corporal Brett Urano said emergency responders were called to the area of River Road and Bridge Street in Keremeos Tuesday night, Oct. 6, at approximately 11:30 p.m., following reports of a single-vehicle motor vehicle incident.

Cpl. Urano said the vehicle left the roadway and entered the Similkameen River, where it came to rest on its side. First responders, with help from search and rescue personnel, worked to safely rescue the occupants from the vehicle. The occupants, including the driver, sustained injuries and were transported to hospital for medical treatment.

A 17-year-old female passenger from Cawston, B.C., was transported to hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, Cpl. Urano confirmed.

The investigation remains in its early stages. Alcohol is believed to be a factor, and a criminal investigation is ongoing, Cpl. Urano confirmed.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young woman who lost her life in this tragic incident,” said S/Sgt. Dan Pollock Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen RCMP. “Investigators are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the events leading up to it, or who has relevant video footage, to contact police.”

Investigators are seeking witnesses and any dash camera, security camera, or cellphone video from the area of River Road and Bridge Street in Keremeos, between 11 p.m. and midnight on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. Anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact the Keremeos RCMP at 250-499-5511 and reference the file number 2026-1149.
