POPKUM – A man with an outstanding arrest warrant out of Quebec was arrested earlier this week and charged following an altercation at a gas station in Popkum in which he was suspected of shoplifting.

RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener says police in Agassiz responded to a report of an assault at a gas station on Yale Road in Popkum at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Oct. 6.

Cpl. Kiener says investigators learned that a man had allegedly left the store without paying for merchandise. Several bystanders intervened and assisted in restraining the suspect until police arrived and arrested him. Both the witness and the suspect sustained injuries during the incident and received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, Cpl. Kiener said.

During the investigation, officers learned the suspect was also the subject of an outstanding arrest warrant from Quebec. The suspect, identified as Olivier Boily, was held in custody for court and is awaiting a bail hearing, Cpl. Kiener said.

Crown prosecutors have approved three charges, including theft under $5,000 (Section 334(b) of the Criiminal Code of Canada; assault causing bodily harm (Section 267(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada; and assault with a weapon (Section 267(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
