CHILLIWACK – An infrastructure project involving utility upgrades, and public works improvements to portions of downtown Chilliwack, is expected to last about nine months and result in partial and full-road closures of sections of Main Street at some point.

According to the city’s website, and the text of a letter dated Sept. 29, 2026, that was provided to business tenants on Main Street, the City of Chilliwack is notifying the public about upcoming improvements to Main Street and utility upgrades happening north of Highway 1.

Construction will commence with utility upgrades, starting on Yale Road at Alexander Avenue, and continuing along Main Street to Wellington Avenue. Utility upgrades will occur and proceed during the fall and into 2027.

The city says this work will be followed by construction of civil and electrical infrastructure for the south half of Main Street – Yale Road to Kipp Avenue. The improvements consist of curb realignment, a new traffic signal and lighting, a new concrete boulevard, street streets, and paving, all with a goal of being completed by summer 2027.

The city says the project has been designed and will be administered by ISL Engineering Ltd., while the construction will be completed by Regehr Contracting Ltd.

The text of the letter dated Sept. 29, 2026, and signed by Senior Engineering Technologist Keegan MacIsaac, says the city recognizes that construction activities may impact nearby residents, businesses and road users.

“The City of Chilliwack and our builders are committed to minimizing disruptions and keeping the community informed throughout the project,” the letter stated. “During the project, properties on Main Street should expect partial or full road closures, parking restrictions, and fenced off areas. It has been a priority for the City to ensure walking paths are maintained to business frontages and that any disruptions would be coordinated through the builder with owners. Residential parking accesses to Main Street will also be coordinated the same way.”

The City of Chilliwack has begun placing notice boards about the project at Yale Road and Alexander Avenue (near the McDonald’s) and another in the downtown core. The notice boards indicate the project will begin in October and continue through to July 2027, or approximately nine months.

“Thank you for your cooperation and understanding through these upcoming works to Main Street. We are confident that the finished project will greatly enhance Main Street for owners and visitors alike,” the letter from MacIsaac concluded.
