CHILLIWACK – A motorist has been fined hundreds of dollars for ignoring a bus in the Chilliwack River Valley that had its flashing lights activated and stop sign extended.

Police in Chilliwack say a school bus had stopped sometime between Monday, Sept. 21 and Sunday, Sept. 27, on Chilliwack Lake Road to allow children to cross the roadway. The bus had activated its flashing lights and horizontal stop sign often seen when school kids are being dropped off. Police did not reveal the exact time and date of the vehicle infraction.

Despite the visible lights, and the extended stop sign on the side of the bus, a vehicle travelling in the oncoming lane did not stop and continued driving past the bus.

The Upper Fraser Valley RCMP said in a social media post that the driver was subsequently issued a $368 violation ticket for failing to stop for a school bus.

Video posted online by police indicates the driver did not come to a complete stop as required by law.

“When a school bus displays flashing red lights and an extended stop sign, traffic in both directions must stop, unless the roadway is divided by a median,” police wrote on Tuesday, Sept. 29. “These rules are in place to protect children as they get on and off the bus and cross the road. Let’s keep our children safe by staying alert and following the rules of the road. With school back in session, drivers are reminded to pay extra attention around school buses transporting children and students.”
