Chilliwack mayoral candidate announces candidacy, says she’ll work to cut property taxes

“Since he was first elected in 2011, Jason Lum has voted to raise property taxes every single year. Year after year, for fifteen years in a row, Jason Lum has voted for higher property taxes, and he’ll raise taxes even higher if he becomes the Mayor,” Rosini claimed.

Councillor Lum defended his record in a text message sent to Fraser Valley Today Thursday afternoon (Sept. 10). He acknowledged that property taxes have increased over the years, but explained why he stands by his votes.

“I’m also not going to pretend taxes haven’t increased – they have, and I voted for those budgets. Those decisions included significant increases in policing, fire protection, and infrastructure,” Councillor Lum said. “Anyone promising both lower taxes and more services should be prepared to show residents the numbers and explain how they’ll deliver it.”

Rosini asserted, “Chilliwack cannot afford four years of Jason Lum’s higher taxes, his excuses on public safety, or his pro-drug and pro-NDP drug site policies. Jason Lum would bring more BC Housing drug sites to Chilliwack, and he’d make all of us pay for the cost of policing them through higher property taxes,” Rosini said.

Councillor Lum contested that portrayal.

“People in Chilliwack are right to be concerned about affordability, public safety, homelessness and addiction,” Councillor Lum responded. “Those are serious issues, and they deserve more than partisan labels. I’m proud of my record of supporting our RCMP and first responders, pushing for better access to treatment and recovery, and holding the Province and BC Housing accountable. I’ve worked with governments of every political stripe because my job has always been to put Chilliwack first. That’s exactly how I’ll lead as Mayor.”

For its part, the Conservative Electors Association said they supported Rosini’s policy positions.

“Martina brings strong conservative values, practical experience in government, and the strength, character, and determination to stand up for Chilliwack residents,” said David Denhoff, President of the Conservative Electors Association. “She understands that taxpayers deserve respect, police and first responders deserve support and that families need to feel safe in their own neighbourhoods. If you want Chilliwack to be more affordable, with safer neighbourhoods, and stronger local businesses, then you have to vote Conservative, and support Martina Rosini for Mayor.”
