BC Greens announce pick for Abbotsford-Mission by-election

ABBOTSFORD — A fourth name has joined the roster of candidates for Abbotsford-Mission – the BC Green Party has announced Stephen Fowler as its pick for the riding in the upcoming by-election.

“Stephen is a passionate, caring community advocate and I am thrilled to be supporting him,” said Leader of the BC Greens, Emily Lowan. “The people of Abbotsford-Mission deserve a politics that doesn’t just offer a vision of what it’s against, but what it can do to make life better — that’s why Stephen is the right candidate for this moment.

Fowler, a lifelong Fraser Valley resident, previously worked at a local mill in Maple Ridge for four years before becoming a teacher at Rick Hansen Secondary in Abbotsford. While the job paid well at first, Fowler says the experience taught him that the more trees were cut, the less wealth generated stayed in the province.

He now stands with the BC Greens as the current systems have failed to confront a climate emergency, destroying “entire communities” in B.C.

“Government’s job is to actually make people’s lives better, to create opportunity and tackle problems together that we cannot face alone,” said Fowler. “But the two main parties lack the courage to champion proven solutions. That’s what I’m prepared to do.”

The Greens candidate is running on a platform that advocates ending the housing crisis through affordable social housing, providing fast, free transit, and investing in Community Health Centres in every neighbourhood to alleviate pressure on emergency rooms.

“The people of Abbotsford-Mission deserve someone ready to tell it like it is, and that will push the government to always prioritize their needs and do what needs to be done to better support families and communities across the region,” Fowler added.

He’s set to run against the Conservatives’ Kerry-Lynne Findlay, Pam Alexis with the NDP and CentreBC’s Lakhwinder Jhaj on September 26.
