Chilliwack councillors deny variance permit for day care on Young Road, citing parking concerns
CHILLIWACK – Chilliwack councillors have voted down a request for a development variance permit for a proposed day care on Young Road due to concerns around reduced parking in that area.
According to items 11.4.3 and 13.4 on this past Tuesday’s council meeting agenda, applicant Gurgan Kaur Virk had applied to amend zoning bylaw standards in order to convert a rear parking area for a proposed child care facility at 9094 Young Road.
The City of Chilliwack issued a building permit in August 1995 to construct a commercial building at 9094 Young Road. Nine parking spaces and one loading space were provided as part of the construction pursuant to the off-street parking requirements in place at that time.
Since that time, zoning bylaw standards pertaining to landscaping, parking space dimensions, maneuvering aisles, pedestrian pathways and off-street loading have been updated, meaning the parking area at 9094 Young Road became “legally non-conforming” to the city’s zoning bylaw.
