FVRD director representing Fraser Canyon area to seek re-election

BOSTON BAR – An elected official on the Fraser Valley Regional District representing parts of the Fraser Canyon who were hardest hit by regional wildfires plans to run again in this fall’s municipal election.

Diane Johnson, Electoral Area A director for the Fraser Canyon encompassing communities like Boston Bar, North Bend and Canyon Alpine, says she would be honoured to continue serving the community where she’s lived for more than 50 years.

“My commitment to Area A began long before I became Director. Over many years of volunteering in the community, I came to understand even more deeply the strength of our residence, the challenges rural communities face and the importance of people stepping forward to help,” said Johnson. “I sought this role because I care deeply about Area A and the people who call it home.”

She says most of the work involving a regional board director happens behind the scenes, like talking to constituents, answering phone calls, advocating on behalf of residents, and attending meetings.

Among her accomplishments, she says she was pleased to secure Community Works funding toward the replacement of an Area A fire engine anticipated for 2027. She says she’s advocated for families affected by wildfire, including those who suffered losses during the Kookipi Creek fire, and a host of other issues that matter to Fraser Canyon ratepayers.

“During my term, I have worked on local ambulance staffing, highway repairs following the atmospheric river, road and pothole concerns, access to septic services, transportation challenges for residents requiring specialist medical care, continued advocacy for animal control and for highway paving through the Canyon,” Johnson said. “I have also been able to help individual residents navigate issues involving their homes, water and other local services. Those individual concerns matter to me just as much as the larger projects.”

As budget discussions happen this fall, she also plans to present ideas around fairer compensation for area volunteer firefighters.

“Over these past years, I have built strong working relationships with fellow Directors, FVRD staff, provincial ministries, First Nations and the many organizations and agencies our community relies upon. Those relationships help me bring Area A’s concerns to the right people and continue working toward practical solutions,” Johnson said. “Public service is not always easy, and we will not always agree on every issue. I welcome questions, constructive feedback and respectful discussion. Even when opinions differ, I remain committed to listening, treating people with respect and making decisions based on what I believe will best serve Area A.”
