Home-made weapons, drug paraphernalia seized after inmate assaulted at Fraser Valley prison

MISSION – Correctional staff at a Fraser Valley prison have seized home-made weapons and drug paraphernalia due to a lockdown and exceptional search that began last week after an inmate was assaulted.

Correctional Service Canada says the lockdown that began at Mission Institution last Tuesday, August 18, has ended and the exceptional search has been completed.

The medium-security prison has resumed its normal operations and visits have resumed.

During the exceptional search, contraband and unauthorized items were found. They include contraband, home-made weapons and drug paraphernalia.

The lockdown was implemented to allow staff to search the facility following an inmate assault.

“The search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates,” said CSC.

A person who works for CSC told Fraser Valley Today on the condition of anonymity that an inmate was stabbed and airlifted to hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

CSC only said that an inmate was assaulted. It typically does not reveal the full nature of inmate assaults, including circumstances around the assault itself, what weapons were utilized if any, and if patients were airlifted to hospital.

Visits to the prison were suspended until the search was completed.
