UPDATE, 3:30 P.M. THURSDAY: Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener has confirmed that an adult male drowned at Cultus Lake Thursday afternoon. He had been on an inflatable boat prior to being reported missing.

In a statement, Cpl. Kiener says Chilliwack RCMP received a report at approximately 1:12 p.m. about a missing person last seen in the waters of Cultus Lake at Entrance Bay.

Officers responded immediately, along with other first responder agencies, and began searching the area where the man was last reported seen.

At approximately 2:40 p.m., the man was located in the water near Entrance Bay and retrieved by emergency crews. CPR was administered but sadly the man did not survive.

Police say the investigation has now been turned over to the BC Coroner Service.

Chilliwack RCMP say they would like to thank the Cultus Lake Fire Department and Chilliwack Search and Rescue for their expertise and assistance.

“This is a tragic incident that no one anticipates happening when they spend a day enjoying the water,” said Cpl. Kiener. “Our condolences go out to the man’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

The drowning is the second in less than two weeks ago at Cultus Lake. The body of a 13-year-old girl was recovered on Monday afternoon, August 10, by the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team. She had fallen into the water at Cultus Lake on Saturday, August 8, while paddleboarding, according to a statement from police.

In addition to these two tragedies, there have been two near-drownings at Cultus Lake reported by police in the past month.
