Langley RCMP investigate vandalism to rainbow crosswalk

LANGLEY – Mounties in Langley are investigating an incident in which three youths allegedly vandalized a recently painted rainbow crosswalk in Fort Langley while operating electric dirt bikes.

Langley RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Zynal Sharoom says the Township of Langley public works department recently installed a new rainbow crosswalk at Mary Streeet and Glover Road in Fort Langley. Sgt. Sharoom says damage to the crosswalk was discovered the next day and reported to police.

“Following a review of video surveillance from the area, investigators observed three individuals, believed to be youths, riding electric dirt bikes and intentionally damaging the crosswalk,” said Sgt. Sharoom. “Police are releasing photographs of the individuals and the electric dirt bikes involved in hopes that members of the public may be able to assist investigators in identifying those responsible.”

Sgt. Sharoom says the crosswalk was installed as a symbol of inclusion, diversity, and community pride.

“Damage to public infrastructure, particularly features intended to celebrate community values and inclusivity, not only affects the broader community but also results in unnecessary repair and maintenance costs,” Sgt. Sharoom said.

In addition to this vandalism investigation, Sgt. Sharoom says police in Langley continue to receive reports regarding the operation of electric dirt bikes on public roads, sidewalks, crosswalks, parks, and other public spaces. Many of the electric dirt bikes currently being operated in the community are not street legal and do not meet provincial requirements for use on public roadways.

“The growing popularity of these vehicles has raised increasing public safety concerns, including dangerous driving behaviours, risks to pedestrians, and damage to public property. Police are working with partners to address these concerns through enforcement and public education,” Sgt. Sharoom said.
