Chilliwack Mayor Popove defends two infrastructure road projects, says they’ve been planned for years

CHILLIWACK – Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove is defending two road projects that could cause construction-related delays for motorists, saying they’ve been on the books for years and will significantly improve civic infrastructure around Chilliwack once completed.

Mayor Popove told 89.5 JR Country Morning host Glen Slingerland during a visit Thursday morning that the Watson Road design-build project, which carries an estimated price tag of $7.5 million, will provide necessary upgrades to that area.

“It’s a plan that’s been in place for a number of years, and away we go,” Popove said. “It’s really overdue. Safety is a big issue there with the turning lane, proper pathing, and sidewalks. That’s gonna fire up. It’s gonna create some detours and such, but you can’t build roads in the winter time. I’m not sure when they’re breaking ground but it’s gonna be soon.”

A second project in the works, the Main Street Corridor Rebuild between Yale Road and Wellington Avenue, involves removing or decommissioning all existing city-owned utilities of water, sanitary and storm sewers systems, street lighting systems and three traffic signals systems nearing their end of life. Construction will include complete rebuilds of three signalized intersections along the corridor, concrete curb and gutter; concrete sidewalk including stamped concrete boulevard; new road structure including base, subbase, asphalt paving works, road markings and signage, street trees including tree grates and structural soil; and ornamental street lighting meeting the downtown standard which includes irrigation for hanging baskets.

Mayor Popove says the vision for that area aligns with what the City of Chilliwack has done on Yale Road near Five Corners.

“To mimic what we have here (downtown) with planting, ornamental lighting, proper sidewalks, and that kind of thing,” Popove told Slingerland. Referring to Main Street, he said, “That chunk of road, infrastructure, the stuff that’s in the ground, it’s old, antiquated and needs to be brought up. With all the apartments in that area that feed into our system, this again is a project that’s been on the books (for years). It probably will start this year. It will just add to the ambience of that area. That’s gonna be the next area that will really explode with the potentials because there’s a lot of older buildings.”
