ABBOTSFORD – A 37-year-old man known to police may have gotten away the first time, but it was only a matter of time before authorities caught up to him and brought him to justice.

AbbyPD spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker says police initiated a traffic stop on Whatcom Road near Highway 1 in Abbotsford this past Sunday, April 12 at approximately 2:40 a.m. Instead of complying with directions to pull over, the man opted to flee from the attempted traffic stop.

Just a day later on Monday, patrol officers located the vehicle, arrested the driver and seized drugs and weapons from inside. The driver was also issued an immediate five-month driving prohibition.

The vehicle was seized as offence related property, and an application for its forfeiture is now underway.

Criminal charges against the unnamed man are now pending.

Sgt. Walker says failing to stop for police is a criminal offence, and while officers may choose not to pursue a vehicle at the time due to public safety considerations, it’s worth noting that not being chased does not mean you’re getting away. It simply means officers are choosing safety over speed—temporarily.

“Bottom line: outrunning responsibility is a lot harder than stepping on the gas,” Sgt. Walker wrote.
