CHILLIWACK – A local non-profit whose programs benefit older adults in and around Chilliwack will hold its annual fundraiser later this week featuring a garage sale, spring plant sale, BBQ and more.

Connie Stam from Chilliwack-based Compassionate Neighbours says the group’s annual Spring fundraiser happens this Saturday, April 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chilliwack Alliance Church parking lot, located at 8700 Young Road.

The event will feature a jumbo garage sale, a spring plant sale, a Krispy Kreme doughnut sale along with morning coffee with a doughnut, a BBQ hot dog lunch, and a collection of donated refundables.

Stam has also procured 20 bouquets of flowers from Quik’s Farm that will be sold for $20 each.

Compassionate Neighbours will also sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts at the Walmart store at 8249 Eagle Landing Parkway from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., or until all dozens are sold.

“Compassionate Neighbours looks to the generosity of our community to help support the growing programs that they offer to the most vulnerable among us,” Stam told Fraser Valley Today. “Besides supplying us with your gently used items as you spring clean, declutter, or downsize, and designating your refundables to our cause, there is also the possibility to support us by already pre-ordering a dozen or two of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. Monetary donations of any amount are also deeply appreciated.”

Stam says Compassionate Neighbours is working toward a fundraising goal of $110,000 that it needs to raise for the current fiscal year.

“We are extremely grateful to our volunteers and for the grants that we receive to cover parts of program costs, but this does not cover the administrative costs,” Stam explained. “For each new older adult joining the services we offer, there is the processing of the referral, the scheduling of their activities and, where needed, organizing their initial transportation needs. There are many other administrative costs such as renting a venue, purchasing refreshments, scheduling and purchasing meals for the social luncheons, recruiting and onboarding volunteers, and maintaining accurate financial statements, just to mention a few. Your attendance and support at our Spring Fundraiser event, will be deeply appreciated and will encourage and help us as we strive to reach the $110,000.00 that we need to raise in this fiscal year.”

Compassionate Neighbours strives to serve any and all socially isolated or lonely seniors who are referred to their program. Stam says social isolation can have the same adverse health effects as smoking, obesity and inactivity. Loneliness can also lead to a 50 per cent increased risk of developing dementia.

“We will look forward to meeting you at our Spring Fundraiser on April 18,” Stam said. “Even if you are not into garage sales, please come by to say hi, pick up a dozen of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, or a plant, purchase a hot dog lunch, and leave your refundables with us.”

Anyone who would like to preorder Krispy Kreme doughnuts, or would like to donate gently used items for the garage sale portion of the fundraiser event, are welcome to contact Shonagh, the administrative assistant for Compassionate Neighbours. Her email is admin@cnhps.org, and her number is 778-539-5201.

If residents pre-order, Compassionate Neighbours does require an e-transfer, or a payment by cash or cheque, for the order to be listed as a pre-order. The Compassionate Neighbours email for this purpose is: funds@cnhps.org.

“When transferring funds, please make clear in the note section who this is from and its purpose,” Stam said. “If leaving a donation and you would like an income tax receipt, please provide us with your full name and address and we would love to mail this to you. We are grateful for any amount received!”
