School zones back in effect across Fraser Valley

Fraser Valley — School is back in session, and Chilliwack and Abbotsford drivers are being reminded that 30 km/h school zones are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.

Police officials are reminding drivers to slow down, be aware of their surroundings and watch for students returning to school.

According to ICBC, children face increased risks while travelling to and from school. Its data shows minors are more than twice as likely to be involved in a crash during morning and afternoon school commute periods than at other times of day.

The risk is even greater in September, when crashes involving minors are 37 per cent higher than the monthly average.

ICBC advises drivers to watch for school buses and stop when their lights are flashing. Vehicles approaching from both directions must stop. Drivers should also proceed with caution when another vehicle stops in front of or next to them, as the vehicle may be yielding to a pedestrian.

For parents and caregivers dropping off children in school zones, ICBC recommends children exit the vehicle on the side closest to the sidewalk. Drivers should not stop in no-parking or no-stopping areas or block crosswalks, as doing so can prevent drivers from seeing children as they walk and put their safety at risk.

As opposed to school zones, playground zones have a 30 km/h speed limit in effect every day from dawn to dusk.
