MERRITT – A 50-hectare wildfire that ignited east of Merritt on Wednesday has since tripled in size.

According to the BC Wildfire Service website, the wildfire that broke out on Lower Nicola Indian Band (LNIB) land just east of Merritt Wednesday has since grown to 150 hectares.

The blaze was first reported earlier in the day in the Hamilton Hill/Quilchena Creek area of the Hamilton Creek 7 reserve.

The fire is estimated at 50 hectares and out of control. BCWS defines an out of control fire as one that is spreading or it is anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter, or control line.

It is believed to have been caused by human activity.

In a post to social media, the LNIB says it is aware of the situation and BCWS crews are responding.

BCWS has not indicated how many firefighters are battling the blaze or what equipment it’s using.
