CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack’s Downtown BIA is advising those who work and live in the downtown of the closure of the Chilliwack Wellness Centre at 45951 Trethewey Avenue.

The overnight shelter portion of the Wellness Centre will continue to operate until June 30 however, the drop-in day use and the overdose prevention portions are closed as of today (April 1).

In a letter to downtown business owners, the BIA’s Trevor McDonald says Wellness Centre staff will continue to be available to redirect clients to other services and support areas for the next two weeks. He says business owners should expect challenges as clients try to adjust their current routines.

McDonald says the BIA hopes the clients using the drop-in day use centre will move to other existing shelters and health service sites in Chilliwack.

The BIA says the Wellness Centre was never intended to be permanent and fails to meet the BC Building Code or the City’s Zoning Bylaw. Chilliwack City Council agreed to look past the bylaw violation for six months when it initially supported the opening of the Centre in 2022.

It asks that questions regarding the closure of the overnight shelter be referred to BC Housing. Questions regarding the drop-in day use closure should be directed to the operator, the Lookout Society.
