Fraser Valley residents, organizations honoured at annual diversity awards

ABBOTSFORD — Six individuals and groups have recently been recognized for their efforts in championing diversity and inclusion across the Fraser Valley.

The 23rd annual Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards welcomed 350 guests to the Clarion Hotel and Conference Centre on March 4, with international leadership expert Adel Gamar as keynote speaker and Abbotsford Mayor Ross Siemens in attendance.

“Your actions are truly an inspiration to us all, and you deserve to be celebrated,” said Siemens.

Abbotsford residents Jane Njogu and Elan Chow have each received Champion of Diversity and Youth Champion of Diversity awards, respectively.

Chow, a high school senior, has been advocating for anti-racism, food security and inclusive music mentorship, while Njogu was recognized for her work supporting vulnerable neighbours at the Fraser Valley Rent bank.

“When one has a roof over their head, especially as an immigrant or even any other person, you can begin again,” said Njogu. “You can dream again. You can start again.”

The following organizations have also received awards:

  • Waceya Métis Society- Inclusive Environment, Small organization
  • Free Store Chilliwack and Social Development Society- Inclusive Environment, Large organization
  • Geographies of the Heart- Stories from Newcomers to Canada, Innovative Initiative
  • Mission Folk Music Festival Society- Intercultural Arts, Culture and Events

The awards began in 2003 and are presented by Abbotsford-based non-profit Archway Community Services.
