Fire south of U.S.-Canada border claims life of 95-year-old man

SUMAS – Emergency responders in Whatcom County say a fire at a residence south of the U.S.-Canada border Sunday morning has tragically claimed the life of a 95-year-old man.

According to a joint statement from the Whatcom County Fire Marshals Office and Whatcom County Fire District 14, fire crews responded to the 3300 block of Halverstick Road in Sumas at 8:58 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 8) for a reported residential structure fire.

On arrival, fire crews observed smoke and flames emanating from the home. The Pulse Point app indicates at least 15 emergency response units were notified about the structure fire on Halverstick Road.

As firefighters extinguished the blaze, a deceased man was located inside the structure, later identified as a 95-year-old man.

The Whatcom County Fire Marshals Office has determined the fire originated in victim’s bedroom and the cause has been identified as an electrical failure involving the wiring supplying the hot water heater.

The Whatcom County Medical Examiners’ Office has taken jurisdiction of the victim’s remains and will determine the cause of death.
