Three out of control wildfires ignite east of Chilliwack Lake, southeast of Hope

SKAGIT VALLEY/EAST OF CHILLIWACK LAKE — Three new wildfires ranging in size from less than a hectare to over four hectares have ignited east of Chilliwack Lake and southeast of Hope in the past 24 hours.

According to BC Wildfire Service’s online dashboard, two of the wildfires are located east of Chilliwack Lake, while the third is located south of Hope.

The more northerly fire east of Chilliwack Lake is only 0.009 hectares in size, while the one just south is 4.1 hectares. In both cases, lightning is suspected as the cause.

The other fire located southwest of Hope is an estimated 1.1 hectares. Its suspected cause is lightning.

All three fires were discovered on Wednesday, Aug. 27.

BCWS says the 4.1-ha fire is being managed “using a combination of techniques with the goal to minimize damage while maximizing ecological benefits from the fire,” adding that suppression or values protection may occur in areas of an otherwise beneficial fire.
