SEABIRD ISLAND – Homicide investigators announced Thursday (Sept. 5) that a 36-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Seabird Island woman earlier this year.

According to a news release from Corporal Chase Smith, media relations officer for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, the B.C. Prosecution Service has approved one count of second-degree murder against 36-year-old Fredrick Paul Charlie in connection with the death of Vanessa Terry. IHIT says Charlie will remain in police custody until his initial court appearance.

On April 6, 2024, Mounties in Agassiz were called to a residence near the 8200 block of Charles Drive in Agassiz on Sq’éwqel (Seabird Island) First Nation for the report of a sudden death. On arrival, police located a deceased woman, later identified as 33-year-old Vanessa Terry.

As a result of evidence obtained by the B.C. Coroners Service, IHIT took control of the investigation and collaborated closely in partnership with the Agassiz RCMP, the B.C. Coroners Service, and the Integrated Forensic Identification Services (IFIS) to advance the investigation.

Today, September 5, Crown counsel approved the single charge of second-degree murder against Charlie.

“Incidents of intimate partner violence are tragic and have devastating, long-lasting effects on families and communities. IHIT would like to extend our condolences to Ms. Terry’s loved ones and community,” said IHIT spokesperson Corporal Chase Smith.

Since the criminal matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released by police.
