Chilliwack RCMP nabs double-digit distracted drivers at Vedder/Luckakuck in less than 3 hours

CHILLIWACK — The Chilliwack RCMP’s traffic unit says it teamed up with a rep from ICBC and the City of Chilliwack for an enforcement initiative designed to crack down on distracted drivers at a busy intersection in Chilliwack earlier this month.

From a police perspective, their efforts paid dividends as police issued over 30 violation tickets, or nearly one citation every six minutes, in just under three hours.

According to a post on Facebook, the enforcement action occurred at Luckakuck and Vedder. Police shared an image of what appeared to be a uniformed constable in a bucket truck lift next to the Esso gas station at Luckakuck/Vedder, overlooking motorists.

The exact citation figures provided by the Chilliwack RCMP included 31 violation tickets, of which 29 were for distracted driving, in just under three hours. The initiative coincides with Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The Abbotsford Police Department says it undertook a similar initiative earlier this month. On Saturday, March 16, AbbyPD’s Traffic Enforcement Unit focused on distracted drivers. In just three hours alone, 19 violation tickets for using an electronic device while driving were distributed, of which two distracted drivers were also found to be driving under the influence.
